I was talking about how progressives are changing the names of places to fit in with their demented idea that ….well, I’m not really sure what the thought behind it is. I wanted to find out where this came from and I found myself on this website https://reevesroam.com/why-is-melbourne-also-called-naarm/ The front page has a gigantic photograph of a mural of an angry looking Aboriginal child staring balefully from the side of a Victorian building, presumably in Melbourne somewhere. At this point I have to say that it is Melbourne, always was, and always will be as far as I’m concerned, but I digress.

Flinders Lane Melbourne
The website was created by Ben Reeves who is a South African traveling blogger. His website is called ReevesRoam. As of 2022 when he wrote this article he had been living in Melbourne for four years. What he says he has discovered from his research is that “Naarm is the indigenous name for the area we now know as Melbourne – or at least the CBD part of Melbourne.”
“It was the original name given to a small part of the Port Phillip area area by the original people of the lands here.”

Melbourne
“The name is thought originally to have come from the Boonwurrung tribe who covered the area from around the shoreline of north and east Port Phillip and all the way out to Gippsland.” Beyond that, it gets a bit murky. He goes on to say, “I’ve read that Indigenous Australians prefer the mentioning of “Kulin Nation” or “Gunditjmara Land” as it acknowledges the tribes who were displaced and are traditional owners. It also sounds better, “Melbourne, Kulin Nation, Victoria, Australia.” We could debate this for hours I’m sure, but nobody cares.

again… Melbourne
There are some comments on the story that aren’t quite so positive. “Naarm may have been the name for the area they hunted and lived in, yes, but has nothing to do with the city of Melbourne. Melbourne is NOT an Aboriginal City – there was never an Aboriginal settlement here before the city was founded. Additionally, to the Kulin, who were transient Hunter Gatherers, never built or used permanent settlement. And before the comments come in citing Bruce Pascoe, he is not a real Aboriginal, let alone reliable historian. He made everything up!” Oh dear..

Yep, Melbourne
There is another *website which offers the same information and some.. https://www.ncesc.com/geographic-faq/why-is-melbourne-called-naarm/
If you scroll down the page you’ll find other fascinating trivia such as “Why do aboriginals have Irish surnames?” and “Is Melbourne named the friendliest city in the world?” The answer to that is “yes”, apparently. “Melbourne has been hailed as the friendliest city in the world. According to a report, Melbourne has been recognized for its kind inhabitants (just avoid the machete wielding Africans) and inclusive culture, earning the top spot among its global peers.”

Melbourne Town Hall
Well, that settles it then. There are some interesting (totally absurd) comments on Reddit, but you can’t copy paste or take a screenshot of any of it for some reason. Reddit content must be so valuable and precious that nobody else is allowed to see it. Fuck Reddit and the horse it rode in on.

still Melbourne

You guessed it…Melbourne
It all seems so inclusive and harmless and friendly doesn’t it? TLDR, It’s not. Melbourne Melbourne, Melbourne, Melbourne, for ever and beyond.
